Military Career
James R. Patterson was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps following graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point. Over the next 20 years, he served in a series of logistics and supply chain assignments spanning four continents. His early career included platoon leader and company commander roles at Fort Lee, Virginia, where he managed supply distribution for combat service support units. He later served as a battalion logistics officer (S-4) during deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, overseeing supply chain operations that sustained forward-operating bases across two theatres of war.
Patterson's mid-career assignments included a staff position at the Department of Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), where he coordinated subsistence and general supply procurement for military installations in the Pacific region. He completed the Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and subsequently earned a Master of Science in Supply Chain Management from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. His thesis research focused on the economic impact of non-appropriated fund instrumentalities (NAFIs) on military community resilience.
